  One of Zhao Yus most significant discoveries was the identification of a specific type of stem cell called hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These cells are responsible for generating all of the blood cells in the body.

  Using a technique called genetic lineage tracing, Zhao Yu and his colleagues were able to track the fate of individual HSCs in mice. They discovered that a single HSC was capable of generating all of the different types of blood cells in the body, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

  Zhao Yu has also made important contributions to the field of gene editing. In 2013, he and his colleagues developed a new technique called CRISPR/Cas9, which has revolutionized the field of genetic engineering.

  The CRISPR/Cas9 system allows researchers to easily and precisely edit the DNA of living cells. This has enormous potential for treating genetic diseases, as well as for creating new therapies for cancer and other diseases.

  Zhao Yus groundbreaking research has earned him numerous awards and honors. He has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  He has also received the prestigious Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, and the Millennium Technology Prize.
